tennis tip 2

Today's Tip: The Overhead Smash
Many players never develop confidence in their overhead and resort to babying overhead chances. Once your opponent realizes you are not going to put the ball away and end the point they start to lob you every time they're in trouble and they scramble back into position. Also, if you don't have confidence in your overhead you become afraid to attack behind an approach shot for fear of the lob.
From now on without being reckless try to hit all overheads hard and deep. Even if your opponent gets it back you won't give him an easy reprieve, and you've let him know you intend to end points with your overhead.
To gain the confidence you need to hit overheads well you'll need to practice the shot on it's own. The overhead is probably the least practiced shot in the history of tennis and this shot takes a lot of practice. It's not easy to judge the balls speed and trajectory without a lot of practice. So get out with a practice partner and work on your overhead so you "own" the shot.
From now on intend to hit the homerun with your overhead, in other words, end the point. This is the mindset you must have to develop a solid overhead. Hey, even if you hit the bottom of the net or whiff in the beginning, stick with it, and you'll start to get results. Personally, I'd rather go for it and try to end the point and miss, then to let your opponent continue to lob and scramble his way to winning the point.
